There are a few job opportunities abroad for model makers, particularly if you are working at a company that operates internationally. You could be working at a specialty model making firm, design company, production firm, or civil engineering company.

Once you get a degree that is right for you, you can begin applying for firms to hire you as an architectural designer. After years of experience, some architects progress to becoming architects and engineers managers.

These managers generally coordinate staff activities, and can work on larger building projects. Interns at architecture firms can assist with preparation of documents and architectural drawings, building models, and preparation of building drawings in CADD. ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER II directs preparation of architectural presentations and production drawings, as well as participating in the study and design assessment of design proposals, directed by the senior designer or project architect.

A concept model helps show a use of the design concept at its most effective. Interior and exterior models are often shown together in order to portray an overall design feeling for the building. Architects develop the general appearance of houses, buildings, and other structures.

Interior architectural models are also often used by interior design firms, highlighting specific indoor space qualities. Another common architectural model that the firm may utilize is the Site Model, or Urban Design Model, which has one building. A landscape model is more used in landscape architectural firms — firms that heavily rely on models for depicting public space designs.

For instance, a buildings windows need to be designed and cut in some phase of Model building. Model makers make various parts of a model using materials like wood, Plexiglas, Lucite, and foam. In some cases, model makers will have specially designed materials and parts for the miniature buildings ordered by the supplier.

Senior architectural modelmakers are responsible for producing high-quality models, prototypes, and simulations, and are involved in preparing exhibits and presentation materials. From drafting on a scale, to helping out on a prototype, the architectural modelmaker intern assists with building the architectural models. In addition to being creative and demanding a focus on details, this role will provide hands-on experience of how models work and why they are such an integral part of architecture.

We are looking for someone who can both develop and supervise his designs, as well as have hands-on modeling experience, in order to be full-time working with us. We are looking for someone who has expertise in architectural and scale model-building. All candidates should have a comprehensive background in architecture, focusing specifically on design, from scheduling through to materials choices and detailing.

The successful candidate will not only run a workshop and take responsibility for producing conceptual, design, and presentation models, but also facilitate resource utilization among designers. This person will contribute to the overall creative concept of a design, and help to establish the main design direction along with the rest of the team members.

While duties will vary depending on the type of design internship, these can include helping to present concepts to clients, participating on a design team, or even developing and visualizing concepts. You will have a 24/7 perspective of the office, and your duties range from helping higher-ups in aspects of the architecture design, to making client presentations, and working with a build team.

While this might not be the most critical skill, we have found that a lot of architectural designers duties depend on your time-management skills. Most architectural designers listed construction documents, sketchup, and bim on their resumes as skills.
